SANDCASTLE SPLASHES INTO ITS 21ST YEAR!

Councillor Robert Wynne

Sandcastle Waterpark will celebrate its 21st birthday on the 23rd June 2007. To mark the occasion the Worshipful Mayor of Blackpool - Councillor Robert Wynne will receive the key to the Sandcastle Waterpark on the 21st June. The park will launch a summer of celebratory events, promotions and competitions so the general public can join in the celebrations. Details of these events will be released later.

The Sandcastle (as it was formerly known) opened its doors on the 23rd June 1986 and was considered to be a 21st Century Indoor Seaside, and being the largest of its kind in Europe, was warmly welcomed to Blackpool. Over the last two years the waterpark has invested a whopping £6 million to develop a new type of Sandcastle. Now the UK's Largest Indoor Waterpark with 18 slides and attractions including the world's longest indoor rollercoaster waterslide - The Masterblaster, Sandcastle Waterpark has brought a new wave of water entertainment.

Sandcastle Waterpark's Managing Director - John Child has said, "To celebrate the 21st Birthday we would like to focus on giving something back to the community with a series of celebratory events, giveaways and promotions." The Sandcastle Waterpark will also be holding a number of charity events to raise funds for the Mayor's Charity, MRI Scanning for kids - Blackpool's A Knockout Appeal.

In addition, the Sandcastle Waterpark will look back at the history of the site and will launch a regional appeal for nostalgic stories and photographs from 1923-1982 when the Open Air Baths were located on site. An event will take place later in the year to re-create some of the fondly remembered 'Bathing Beauties' and 'Knobbly Knees' competitions.
